Almost two weeks ago, we got our first warm spherical surprise in the chicken run! Selma had acted strange all day on the 13th, making weird yipping and grumbling sounds — just like a dog! When I would play the recordings to Jeff and others — they thought the noises came from a dog!
Around 4pm I went out to pick up my mother in law, while we were driving back I told her all about Selma’s weird behavior. We were excited to check on the chickens when we got back home, but we weren’t expecting what we found! Sometime in the 20 minutes where I was gone, Selma laid an egg in the middle of the chicken run!
On the 15th, we woke up to Patty singing a ton of egg songs and scratching around in the coop. She began to make a nest under her favorite spot on the roost! This time Selma was curious about her sister’s strange behavior and would not leave Patty alone!!! Selma was right up on the roost staring down at her sister the entire time! Sometime before 10am Patty was back out in the run and strutting her stuff, bragging up a storm! Sure enough a little egg was waiting for us in the coop!
Selma’s first egg was small and speckled. Patty’s was completely smooth and single colored, no speckles! Over the next week the two of them continued to make a TON of noise while they discovered this new meaning to their lives. Fortunately, one week after they started laying, they got over the novelty of egg laying and only make some noises to let us know to go check the coop. Both are laying in the same nesting box now, right by my access door! We’ve gotten an egg every day, I think they both lay every other day. Patty laid her second egg the day after her first! That was surprising! No double yolkers so far, but the eggs are slowly getting larger to the size of regular to large grocery store eggs.
Baby is still too young to start laying, but she has got in the nesting boxes and rearranging my fake wooden eggs for me. She’s finally filling out, but I still have no idea if she’ll start laying this fall or wait until the spring.
We’re still buying eggs in the store — but it’s baking season! I hope once Baby starts to lay we wont need to supplement with store-bought eggs.
I’m loving this new adventure in chicken ownership! I’ll be sure to share some of my favorite eggy recipes soon 🙂
